The line of products that you see here was inspired by my arrival in San Francisco; beautiful, sunny but shaky grounds prompted me to create a balancing candle holder that would stay vertical even when the earthquake prone San Francisco would make others topple. The counterweight was originally a perfect travertine sphere that I had bought in Italy. The candle holder sat on a shelf in my house until I discovered wonderfully, naturally rounded rocks on a beach of southern California in Encinitas. When I saw them I couldn’t believe my eyes. I collected a bunch, put them in a duffel bag, and took them home. The baggage handler at the airport after lifting the bag said jokingly, “What are you carrying? Rocks?” Little did he know…
The rocks ended up as counterweights in many different candle holders in my house. A couple of friends who were opening an arts and craft gallery visited my studio and house and wanted those pieces for their gallery encouraging me to make more. That work quickly became best seller and they advised me to show my work nationwide at trade shows. After a slow start in 1995, festa & co. was accepted at the ACC show in Baltimore, MD in 1996. A day had not passed at the show before we wrote more orders than we had written in the past few years. festa & co. was now on the map.
